In this 50 minute introductory class participants will learn all the basic information needed in order to perform in an authentic steel drum band. This includes basic playing technique, proper care and handling of the instruments, instrument construction and history, and basic rehearsal procedures.  It is a fun and easy exploratory class for the curious and adventuresome.
This class is a prerequisite for anyone joining a Beginning Steel Drum class already in progress.

Would you like to experience the music of islands like Jamaica right here in Northeastern Pennsylvania? Then sign up for the beginner class at the Electric City Steel Drum Project. No prior musical experience is necessary—just a desire to play some island music with others. You’ll learn a little of the history and construction of the steel drums, but the emphasis will be on learning to play a song with others in the class. The instruments are made up of melody, upper harmony, lower harmony, and bass steel drums—much like the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass in a chorus. Participants will be placed on a part according to their preference and their individual strengths.

Free to Veterans their immediate family.
